Full U.S. Immigration Laws Delayed in Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced the delayed transition to full application of the U.S. immigration provisions of Title VII of the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 (CNRA) until November 28, 2009. Title VII extends U.S. immigration laws to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) which currently administers its own immigration system.

Janet Woodka Appointed Gulf Coast Rebuilding Coordinator

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced the appointment of disaster recovery veteran Janet L. Woodka, following the selection of Woodka by President Obama to be the Federal Coordinator of Rebuilding in the Gulf Coast Region.

Napolitano to Visit Southwest Border, Mexico

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano plans to travel to the Southwest border and Mexico to meet with Mexican leaders to work together on ways to combat drug violence and tour U.S. ports of entry to observe border protection operations at the ground level.

Conficker/Downadup Computer Worm Detection Tool Released

The Department of Homeland Security released on March 30, 2009 a DHS-developed detection tool that can be used by the federal government, commercial vendors, state and local governments, and critical infrastructure owners and operators to scan their networks for the Conficker/Downadup computer worm.

Proposed Loan Forgiveness for Special Community Disaster Loans

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano announced that FMEA has proposed an amendment to its Special Community Disaster Loan (CDL) regulations to include loan forgiveness procedures and requirements. The proposed regulation, submitted March 30, 2009, to the Federal Register, proposes procedures and requirements for governments who received Special Community Disaster Loans to apply for cancellation of loan obligations.

Napolitano Rolls out DHS Efficiency Review Initiative

Secretary Napolitano unveiled the DHS Efficiency Review initiative, a major program to improve efficiency and streamline decision-making through a series of agency-wide initiatives ranging from eliminating non-mission critical travel to acquiring enterprise licenses for commonly used software, which are collectively expected to lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in cost avoidance.
