The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today began collecting biometrics—digital fingerprints—from non U.S. citizens departing the United States as part of a pilot program at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reached the second major milestone outlined in its Department-wide Efficiency Review, launching five major initiatives set forth by Secretary Janet Napolitano in the plan announced on March 27, including the mandatory review of all new contracts for professional services.

Secretary Napolitano was in Canada meeting with our partners across the Northern border to discuss ways we can share information and cooperate on border security issues, and Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute has been holding similar meetings with our European counterparts in London and Rome. Her discussions are focused on further developing our international relationships and high level of cooperation in combating terrorism, battling crime and illegal migration, and improving cybersecurity efforts.
