Secretary Napolitano and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper met May 26, 2009 to discuss ways in which the United States and Canada can work together to deal with security threats while minimizing the impact on commerce and tourism.

Secretary Napolitano and Canadian Minister of Public Safety the Honorable Peter Van Loan signed an agreement to make Shiprider—joint law enforcement teams stationed along the international maritime border—permanent after touring port operations on both sides of the shared U.S./Canada border on May 26, 2009.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will travel to Detroit and Ottawa on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27.

NSTAC has a long and distinguished history of partnering with the federal government. It includes more than 25 years, five different presidential administrations, and so it becomes one of the models for public-private cooperation and partnership. We often hear that phrase bandied about, public-private partnership, but in the areas that NSTAC is dealing with, there's no other way to get the work done because these areas are divided between the public sector and the private sector. So we have to have some sort of way on a real-time basis to unite our efforts.

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano commended today the seizure of 630 kilograms (0.69 tons) of cocaine by Mexican customs officials at Mexico City International Airport.

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano will travel to Detroit and Ottawa on May 26-27 to tour Northern border operations and meet with officials about shared border concerns, business interests and the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. She will also discuss challenges at the Northern border with state and local officials.

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano plans to visit Florida on May 22 to see hurricane preparedness efforts underway and law enforcement activities at the Miami port of entry. Joining her will be new FEMA Administrator W. Craig Fugate and new ICE Assistant Secretary John Morton—both confirmed May 12 by the Senate.
