Mr. Chairman, Senator Collins, and Members of the Committee: Let me begin by saying thank you for the strong support you have consistently shown the Department, and I look forward to working with you to make certain that we have the right resources to protect the homeland and the American people and that we make the most effective and efficient use of those resources.

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano met May 8, 2009 with her Pakistani counterpart, Interior Minister Rehman Malik. They discussed cooperation between the Department and the Pakistani Interior Ministry on security issues, including mutual interests in combating terrorism, border security and the safety of air travel.

Secretary Janet Napolitano announced initial awards of $50 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for explosive detection systems and advanced technology X-ray units that will streamline baggage screening and enhance security capabilities at airports nationwide. These awards represent the first dollars spent out of a total of $1 billion made available by ARRA for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and reflect the President’s broader commitment to strengthening border and transportation security.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano unveiled the Department's $55.1 billion FY 2010 budget request on May 7th, focused around five major priorities—counterterrorism; border security; enforcement of immigration laws; disaster preparedness, response and recovery; and Department unification—designed to create a leaner, smarter, more effective agency.
