Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Alejandro Mayorkas today welcomed 50 new U.S. citizens representing 29 countries at a naturalization ceremony in Washington, DC. This was the capstone ceremony of USCIS’ annual celebration surrounding Constitution Day and Citizenship Day (Sept. 17th).

Despite potential delays for the future phases of the overall campus development, the facilities that General Services Administration (GSA) are preparing for the Coast Guard will meet our needs and in fact provide a more efficient and functional headquarters than our current spaces. GSA has committed to completing these facilities prior to our move, which is currently scheduled to begin in April 2013.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Deputy Administrator Rich Serino in Joplin, Mo. to survey recovery efforts and meet with state, local and community officials following the May 2011 tornado that struck the region.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today traveled to New York City and honored the memory of Richard Rescorla with the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Distinguished Public Service Medal, the Department's highest honor, for his heroic actions on September 11, 2001, the DHS.

Secretary Napolitano traveled to Orlando, Fla. to attend the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) International 57th annual Seminar and Exhibits, and deliver remarks at the annual Law Enforcement Military Appreciation Day luncheon, where she announced a new partnership between the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) "If You See Something, Say Something" public awareness campaign and ASIS International.

Secretary Napolitano and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton announced a new initiative to streamline the international student visa process for foreign students seeking to study in the United States. The Study in the States initiative is a key component of a government-wide effort to encourage the best and brightest foreign students to study and remain in the U.S.
