CHICAGO - Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today traveled to Chicago to join law enforcement officials from around the world at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference, and deliver remarks on the Department's partnership with the first responder community.

The IACP and the Department of Homeland Security have a long history together … one that goes back to the creation of DHS in 2003, but also extends to many of the legacy agencies that came together to form the department.

The importance of PKEMRA to the emergency management community cannot be stressed enough. For the first time, it gave FEMA clear guidance on its mission and priorities, and provided us with the authorities and tools we needed to become a more effective and efficient agency, and a better partner to state, local, territorial, and tribal governments.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano traveled to North Carolina where she joined Congressman David Price and other state, local and private sector partners to discuss collaborative efforts to build safer, more secure and more resilient communities. Secretary Napolitano also visited Duke University to participate in an on-stage discussion as part of the Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture series.
