WASHINGTON—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano joined local law enforcement leaders and elected officials from communities along the Southwest border at the White House today for a roundtable discussion on the ongoing collaboration among federal, state and local partners to keep our border communities safe and secure while facilitating legal travel and trade.

OSLO, NORWAY - Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today traveled to Oslo, Norway to meet with international partners and discuss the Department's ongoing collaboration with the public and private sector on issues such as cybersecurity as well as combating violent extremism and transnational crime.

"I was saddened to learn of the crash earlier today that took the life of Mexican Interior Secretary Francisco Blake Mora, along with seven others. Their families are in my thoughts and prayers. Secretary Blake Mora was a strong partner in our common fight against terrorism and transnational crime. His loss will be felt on both sides of the border. President Obama and the Department of Homeland Security remain committed to continuing our close relationship with Mexico in order to enhance the security of both nations."

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano will travel to Oslo, Norway, and Stockholm, Sweden, Nov. 14-15, to meet with international partners and discuss the Department’s ongoing collaboration with the two countries on cybersecurity and combating violent extremism and transnational crime. While in Oslo, Secretary Napolitano will meet with the Norweigian Minister of Justice and the Police Knut Storberget, Norwegian Police Security Service Director Janne Kristiansen, and U.S. Ambassador to Norway Barry White, and will offer condolences at the Oslo Cathedral for the victims of the 7/22 bombing and attack on Utoya Island. Later, Secretary Napolitano will join public and private sector partners at an event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Norway—underscoring the Department’s continued commitment to working with the private sector and international partners to create a safe, secure and resilient cyberspace and secure the global supply chain. Secretary Napolitano will also tour the Norwegian Computer Emergency Response Team facility.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano traveled to Nassau, The Bahamas on Nov. 9-10, to deliver the keynote address at the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) Dialogue and meet with Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham to underscore the Obama administration’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and facilitating trade and tourism.

Given the vital role veterans play in advancing the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) mission, Secretary Napolitano set a goal to have 50,000 veterans employed at DHS by the end of 2012. Through a Department-wide effort, Secretary Napolitano announced that this goal was met in FY 2011, more than a year ahead of schedule.
